Istanbul Photo Awards exhibit to open in Vienna

Famed photos by distinguished photojournalists on show through Oct. 2


Anadolu Agency will open the third exhibition of photographs featured at the Istanbul Photo Awards 2016 in the Austrian capital Vienna on Saturday.

Bringing together around 40 pictures showing key events from around the world, the display will be open through Oct. 2.

Saban Kizildag, the deputy chairman of Anadolu Agency’s Executive Board, and the agency’s Deputy Director-General Mustafa Ozkaya will host the opening ceremony at the Museumsquartier.

At the exhibit, visitors can see the work of photographer Abd Doumany, whose image of an injured Syrian boy was chosen Photo of the Year by an international jury.

Also on display will be the work of Sergey Ponomarev, who captured images of refugees for The New York Times that won the Single News category and later a Pulitzer Prize.

Images by prize winners Santi Palacios, Ian MacNicol, and Valery Sharifulin will also be on display.

The exhibit, organized by the Anadolu Agency Cooperate Communication Directorate, is sponsored by the Promotion Fund, Turkish Airlines, and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

Anadolu Agency’s stand has drawn the interest of attendees of the world's largest photojournalism festival, Visa pour L'Image, in the southern French city of Perpignan.

Turkey’s top wire service is participating in the event for the third time, showing exclusive pictures from the recent coup attempt in Turkey, which left 240 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.

Anadolu Agency Visual News Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Sel and Photography Editor Firat Yurdakul attended the 28th edition of Visa Pour L'Image, in which internationally renowned news and photo agencies participate.

Sel and Yurdakul gave information to attendees Saturday about the agency's publication "Feto's Coup Attempt: A Timeline", which gives a complete account of what happened on the night of July15-16, 2016 as witnessed by Anadolu Agency reporters and photojournalists.

Ahmet Sel said foreign agency executives or renowned photojournalists pointed out the importance of seeing what happened during the coup attempt through Anadolu Agency photojournalists’ eyes.

They also discussed the Istanbul Photo Awards, and “anadoluimages.com”.

Sel also said international photojournalists’ interest about the Istanbul Photo Awards had intensively increased as the last two years’ winners Daniel Berehulak from Australia and Sergey Ponomarev from Russia had both received Pulitzers.

Visa Pour L'Image, which is visited by around 150,000 people each year, takes place every year from late August to mid-September for a period of 15 days.

Anadolu Agency is participating in the world's largest photojournalism festival, Visa Pour L'Image, in the southern French city of Perpignan, highlighting its exclusive pictures from the recent coup bid in Turkey.

The festival began Saturday and will end on September 11. This is the third time the Turkish news wire is participating in the event.

Internationally renowned news and photo agencies are participating in the 28th edition of Visa Pour L'Image.

This year, Anadolu Agency's is focusing on telling the story about the deadly defeated coup through photographs taken by its photographers on the night of July 15.

The agency's publication "Feto's Coup Attempt: A Timeline", which gives a complete account of what happened on July15-16, 2016 as witnessed by Anadolu Agency reporters and photojournalists, is being presented at Visa Pour L'Image. The book includes pictures and infographics, showing details of the events and the Turkish nation's resistance against the foiled coup.

Anadolu Agency Visual News Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Sel said: "Anadolu Agency has become a key player in international photojournalism."

Sel said pictures published by Anadolu Agency were being used by world's most prestigious newspapers, magazines and websites.

"Anadolu Agency has become an international brand name in photojournalism," he said.

Visa Pour L'Image, which is visited by around 150,000 people each year, takes place every year from late August to mid-September for a period of 15 days.

The first week of the festival, between Monday and Sunday, has been dedicated to professional photojournalists.

Anadolu Agency is promoting photographs taken in 2016 as well as from "anadoluimages.com" and the "Istanbul Photo Awards", which is Turkey's first international news photo contest run by the wire service.

Anadolu Agency publishes Istanbul Photo Awards album

Album includes striking images from 2015 and 2016 that won prizes at recently-held Istanbul Photo Awards 2016


Anadolu Agency has published images from 2015 and 2016 that created an impression in the world as part of its Istanbul Photo Awards 2016 album.

The album includes outstanding images selected as winners in the Istanbul Photo Awards 2016.

Russian photojournalist Sergey Ponomarev’s image, which captured the struggle of Syrian refugees for The New York Times, made it to the album's cover.

Ponomarev’s photograph had won an award in the Single News category at the Istanbul Photo Awards and later also won the Pulitzer Prize this year.

An exhibition of pictures featured at Istanbul Photo Awards 2016 is also planned in the Austrian capital Vienna, the headquarters of the United Nations in New York and Iran after similar shows in Ankara and Istanbul.

The photos in the competition had been judged in four categories: News Single, News Story, Sports Single, and Sports Story by a jury of international professionals in Istanbul on March 18-21, 2016.

The Istanbul Photo Awards also succeeded in drawing global attention to recent developments in the Middle East.

A jury of international professionals had selected the winning photographs; Turkish Airlines was the official airline sponsor of the contest.

A powerful image showing a deep well of emotion in the eyes of a wounded boy, encapsulating the horror of the last several years in Syria, taken by Syrian photographer Abd Doumany for the AFP was chosen as Photo of the Year 2016 by an international jury of the Istanbul Photo Awards 2016.

An exhibition of photographs from Anadolu Agency’s Istanbul Photo Awards 2016 opens Thursday.

The exhibition from June 2 to 26 at the  Istanbul Photography Museum features key events from the previous year, including the work of photographer Abd Doumany, whose image of an injured Syrian boy was chosen as Photo of the Year by the international jury.

Also on display will be the work of Sergey Ponomarev, who captured images of refugees for The New York Times that won the Single News category and later a Pulitzer Prize.

Images by prize winners Santi Palacios, Ian MacNicol, Valery Sharifulin and Minzayar Oo will also be on show.

The exhibition is sponsored by Turkish Airlines and supported by the Turkish Prime Ministry Promotion Fund.
