A gallery exhibition showcasing award-winning photographs from the recent Istanbul Photo Awards organized by Anadolu Agency opened at Izmir’s Adnan Menderes Airport on Tuesday.
The Istanbul Photo Awards was Turkey's first and only news photograph contest held at an international level.
The contest received approximately 12,000 applications from 104 countries.
Izmir Governor Mustafa Toprak was among the visitors of the first day of the exhibition which will remain open till Aug. 25.
Toprak was informed by Anadolu Agency’s Visual News Editor Ahmet Sel, Corporate Communications Director Esra Kirecci and Mehmet Yilmaz Guldas, the agency's regional director in Izmir, during the exhibition.
"The exhibition is important for Turkey's promotion and the photographs are very impressive," Toprak told Anadolu Agency.
Winning photographs covered different aspects of global news events such as the civil war in Syria, the Ebola outbreak in Africa, the Ukraine conflict, political crises and natural disasters around the world.
Daniel Berehulak's photograph from Liberia about the Ebola epidemic was named Photo of the Year.
Several prestigious professionals got to pick the best photographs in the contest.
The jury included Time Magazine International Photograph Editor Alice Gabriner, Director of Shangai Center of Photography Liu Heung Shing, Stern Magazine Photograph Editor Harald Menk, Getty Images Executive Georges De Keerle, World Press Photo award winning Guillaume Herbaut, World Press Photo award winning war correspondent Patrick Chauvel, AFP Director of Photo Business Development Michel Scotto, Anadolu Agency Visual News Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Sel and Photography Editor Firat Yurdakul.

Anadolu Agency advanced to the shortlist of the Digital Communication Awards in “online competition” category, with being nominated for its Istanbul Photo Awards event held in March.
